Step outside and experience the quiet beauty of the shortest day of the year on a guided walk along the nature trail. As we take in the stillness of late December, we’ll explore the science behind the winter solstice—why it happens, how Earth’s tilt and orbit create our seasons, and what this turning point means for the months ahead.
Along the way, we’ll look to the sky (weather permitting) to discuss the sun’s lower arc across the horizon, the lengthening shadows, and how ancient cultures marked and celebrated this astronomical event. We’ll also examine how the solstice affects the natural world around us—from changes in animal behavior to plant dormancy and shifting daylight patterns.
