Brownstown, Michigan

Brownstown was actually around before Michigan was even officially a state. Like many areas in Michigan, Brownstown was a part of the French Province Quebec and was named after Adam Brown, a young boy who grew up with the Wyandot Indians after being kidnapped around the age of 8.

brownstownBrownstown was actually around before Michigan was even officially a state. Like many areas in Michigan, Brownstown was a part of the French Province Quebec and was named after Adam Brown, a young boy who grew up with the Wyandot Indians after being kidnapped around the age of 8. Adam Brown ended up passing away in Windsor, Ontario in 1827, and the Michigan Territorial Committee officially recognized Brownstown as a township the same year. Michigan did not officially become a state till ten years later.

As time passed, many people came to Brownstown and turned the community into farmland. Many settlers came from central New York and New Jersey by way of the Erie Canal and Lake Erie Steamships. Parts of Brownstown began breaking up though as cities like Flat Rock, Rockwood, and Woodhaven were created. When Brownstown was first established it covered 43-square-miles of land, and today it covers only 22.5-square-miles of land.

As of today, most Brownstown residents are usually in the professional, technical, or service industries. Most children will become college graduates, and Brownstown is also one of the fastest-growing communities in the area. Statistics have shown that on average since 1977, more than 1,000 people per year move to Brownstown.

Brownstown is a great home for families with events like movies and concerts in the park. They also have a farmer’s market every Tuesday in the summer.

Fun Facts:

  • Brownstown residents could go to Taylor, Woodhaven or Gibraltar schools depending on the area they live in.
  • The township is home to the Chevrolet Volt Battery Pack Assembly Plan.
  • As of the 2010 census, the population of Brownstown Township was 30,627.
  • Established in 1893, Kurtzhals Farm is one of the largest remaining farms in the township.
  • The names found around Brownstown and the Downriver area can be traced back to its earliest settlers, like James Vreeland and N.F. Olmstead.
